Artwork / (Aerial Sculpture or Mobile) for the newly remodeled Hasbro Children’s Hospital main lobby atrium, will be commissioned by Lifespan through philanthropic donations and or a sponsoring donor.
Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, whose mission is “Delivering Health with Care”. Opened in 1994, Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the state’s premier advanced pediatric specialty and outpatient center, serving children and families of Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut, and southeastern Massachusetts. With 87 beds on 6 floors, we offer a full spectrum of pediatric services. Each year, the hospital cares for 5,600+ inpatients and 75,000+ outpatients. Additionally, Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the only pediatric ED and designated Pediatric Level 1 trauma and burn center in southeastern New England, which sees 50,000+ patients per year: one of the busiest in the country. We are also the principle pediatric teaching hospital of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, offering highly sought-after residency and fellowship programs.
Theme: Ocean
The current Modernization Project at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, (a total renovation of all interior spaces), uses the Ocean theme to enhance wayfinding and create individual aesthetic themes inspired by the ocean, which uniquely identify each patient floor. Each of the 6 floors within the hospital has been organized by an aspect of the ocean environment using a specific color and graphic imagery to create an easily identifiable space. In alignment with the ocean theme, our donor recognition walls will incorporate a wave them. The donor recognition signs will be visible and present in the 2-story atrium lobby space where the art piece will hang. This includes the ground floor entrance to Hasbro Children’s Hospital and a stairway which leads to the First-floor entrance. The aspect of ocean on the ground floor is “Shores” which includes the shoreline, water lapping, shells, sea glass and the beach. The aspect of ocean on the first floor is Vessels, which includes all water vessels. The overall theme of the renovation includes sea life and sea creatures in all forms moving fluidly through the ocean, as well as the recreation, use and enjoyment of the beautiful beaches and shores of the Ocean State.
The aerial sculpture/mobile will hang from the first-floor atrium ceiling and be visible from the ground floor as well as first floor entry way. The public art sculpture should be both visually and spatially dynamic while enhancing the overall theme of the space and contributing to the identity of the Ocean theme within Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Selection Process
RFQ entries will be reviewed and evaluated by the Lifespan Art and Signage Committee, a 12-member multi-disciplinary panel facilitated by the Lifespan Healing Arts coordinator, members of the Development department and Administration. Additional input will be solicitated by invitation from local curators and or arts professionals.
Finalists
Three artists will be selected by the Art & Signage committee from RFQ submissions and awarded a $1,000 stipend to create a site-specific proposal. Each of the 3 artists chosen will be invited to individually tour the proposed space at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Artists proposals shall include a written description of the artwork, visual data as well as a 3-dimensional maquette to scale. Submission of samples of proposed sculptural materials will be required and must pass review of the infection control department at Lifespan as well as state fire codes. (fabric is not allowed)
A final project shall be chosen by the Art & Signage committee after all 3 proposals are considered on merit in relation to the selection criteria.
Selection Criteria
- Artistic Excellence and Quality: Quality and suitability of the final proposal in relation to the project description and responsiveness to theme.
- Safety: Safety and suitability for public display in a pediatric hospital as well as compatibility with site. It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that all artwork meets safety standards, adheres to building codes, and state regulations.
- Permanence: Durability of materials and maintenance of object in this heavily used public facility. Artwork must be durable and require minimal maintenance.
- Collaboration: Artist must be willing to consult and work with Lifespan administrators, architects, engineers, contractors, and facilities staff to assure smooth integration of the artwork into the site and make necessary adjustments in relation to building codes and other construction issues.

- July 1, 2021: Contract Signed
- December 1, 2021: Installation period begins / If commissioned, we will work with your schedule, however, for embedded elements, selected artist should anticipate working with RIH facilities and contractor’s schedule.
Submission Requirements
Please note: This request for qualifications is the first step in Lifespan’s public art selection process.
- You are not being asked to submit a specific proposal, but rather a request for qualifications (RFQ)
- Lifespan will conduct the submission process online, with all materials submitted digitally.
- There is no charge to the artist for applying to this RFQ.
- At this preliminary stage we are requesting submissions from artists or artists teams consisting of 6 images representing current work (completed within the past five years) and resumes.
- Please include the scale, date of completion and budget for each qualification project submitted.
