2018 Grants for Early Career Prop Professionals

The Society of Properties Artisan Managers (S*P*A*M) is now accepting applications for its grants to help support early career props professionals. The deadline for each is May 15, 2018.

The Jen Trieloff Grant for Theatrical Properties

The Jen Trieloff Grant
The Jen Trieloff Grant is an annual award given to an individual wishing to further their career in theatrical properties. This grant is intended to assist with transportation, housing, or necessities while completing an internship in the field of properties.  Jen Trieloff was Properties Director for American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Forward Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin and has served as Prop Master and Prop Designer for Madison Rep and Madison Opera and Ballet among others.  He was an accomplished craftsman and scene designer whose work was seen on stages inside and outside of Wisconsin.

This grant is overseen and awarded by the Society of Properties Artisan Managers and is for $1000 towards internship expenses.  Individuals wishing to apply for should submit the following:

Cover Letter including details on your internship (when and where), any additional compensation you might be receiving during that time and an estimate of anticipated expenses.

The Edie Whitsett Grant for Theatrical Properties

The Edie Whitsett Grant

The Edie Whitsett Grant is an annual award given to an individual wishing to further their career in theatrical properties, especially but not limited to theatrical props in children’s theater. This grant is intended to assist with transportation, housing, or necessities while completing an internship in the field of properties. Edie Whitsett was the longtime property shop manager and a frequent designer at Seattle Children’s Theatre. She also created sets for Village Theatre, Seattle Opera, ACT Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet and other arts entities. Whitsett’s honors included an Artist Trust fellowship, a commission for an art installation at the Seattle Public Library’s central branch and two Seattle Times Footlight Awards.

Spectrum Gallery call for art for the 2018 Summer Arts Festival

Arts Center Killingworth and Spectrum Gallery announce a Call for Representational and Abstract Painters, Sculptors, Illustrators, Photographers, Original Printmakers, Fabric Artists, Glass and Wood Artisans, Jewelry Designers, and Crafters for the 2018 Essex Town Green Outdoor Summer Arts Festival. Open to visual artists working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, pencil and charcoal, paper, mixed media, fabric, glass, wood, stone, and clay.

Ways to Participate:

1) Exhibit at the two-day Outdoor Summer Arts Festival on the Essex Town Green, Essex, Connecticut. Demonstrate, discuss and sell your artwork. Participation required both days of Festival.

2) Submit work for consideration in the 6-week Spectrum Gallery Group Show at the Center’s Spectrum Gallery, 61 Main St., Centerbrook, CT. Only Outdoor Arts Festival participants are eligible to exhibit in the Spectrum Show.

Black Earth Institute Call for Fellows

The Black Earth Institute is seeking 6 new fellows for 2018-2021

The Black Earth Institute is a community of creative, committed artists and a grant resource. Established in 2005, BEI is dedicated to supporting art in re-forging the links between spirit, earth and society, for art and its makers create the space for changing minds and the world. With this in mind, BEI endeavors to bring together a group of artists who are activists, whether in their own fields or in general causes, to foment change.

BEI seeks fellows from different genres, such as literary, dramatic and media artists; performance artists making a political statement; or journalists addressing the urgent social and environmental issues facing the planet. We seek fellows from different points in their life journeys, be they published or tenured, or new break-through artists, who have gained or are gaining recognition for leadership. BEI will continue its legacy of including fellows representing diverse communities: academic, activist, gender-identified, racial, ethnic and international.

The fellowship lasts for three years, and includes a funded annual retreat, funding for a specific arts project, and editing an issue of About Place Journal. For more information and to apply, click here.
