Patricia Smith Introduction to Gospel Music 102 $3,000 This is the second year of the Introduction Gospel Music. The program was extremely successful. I am working with the same apprentice. This year we hope to continue by taking the introduction and history of gospel music further. The apprentice will explore varied gospel musicians. Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, F.S. Providence Clemente Veterans Initiative Summer Writing Seminar $2,250 Lucas Pralle, USMC veteran and co-founder of Endless Beautiful, will host a 5-session online summer writing seminar for Rhode Island veterans from July 29 to August 26. Lucas will teach vets how to write short stories based on their personal experiences. The wider public can view these stories and learn more about Rhode Island veterans at PCVI.org. Lesly Pineyro Bolivian Folk dance $3,000 In the first apprenticeship, I taught my apprentice the Caporales dance. In Bolivia we have over 300 different dances. This year I chose to teach my apprentice the Tinkus. I will be teaching the Bolivian folkloric dance & history. Colombian American Cultural Society Colombian Independence Day Festival $1,800 The Colombian American Cultural Society of RI will celebrate 210 years of independence from Spanish Colonial authorities at the 48th annual Independence Day Festival in July 2020. The festival draws over 4,000 people from across RI, MA, CT, NY and NJ, providing them an opportunity to engage with the Colombian culture and folkloric traditions. My HomeCourt My HomeCourt 2020 at Cranston Street Tot Lot $1,000 MyHomeCourt (MHC) plans to create a significant work of public art by painting a large-scale mural on the surface of a newly-installed basketball court at the Cranston Street Tot Lot in Providence. Roger Williams Park Conservancy Roger Williams Park Artist-In-Residence $1,000 Artist Brett Day Windham plans to create a body of work at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center. During her residency she will use cyanotype (the early photographic process also known as sunprint) to capture small to large scale prints of plants in the collection, and hand paint them. Stages of Freedom Frederick Douglass in Rhode Island $3,000 Stages of Freedom is planning three performances of Frederick Douglass' famous speech, "What the Black Man Wants" by Trinity Rep actor, Joe Wilson Jr. at Central Falls, Woonsocket and Providence's Paul Cuffee High Schools. Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council Olneyville Square Rain Keep Sculpture $2,000 This project will engage sculpture artist Allison Newsome with young people to create and install a RainKeep sculpture that will function to mitigate polluted runoff impacting the Woonasquatucket River in Olneyville Square as well as beautify an industrial section of the Greenway along San Souci Street. (RI Cape Verdean Heritage Committee) 45th Cape Verdean Independance Day Festival $1,000 RICVHC plans to hold an annual Cape Verdean Independence Day Festival in commemoration of Cape Verde's independence. The festival will be held on July 5th, 2020, at India Point Park in Providence, Rhode Island. ENSEMBLE PARALLAX Island of Peoples and Intolleranza Multimedia Opera $1,000 ENSEMBLE / PARALLAX will perform the New England premiere of its multimedia opera, “Island of Peoples,” composed by Berklee professor, Gabriele Vanoni. The piece will be paired with the premiere of Peyman Farzinpour’s multimedia composition, “Intolleranza.” The performance will take place at AS 220 in Providence, in October 2020. Festival 2020 $1,400 PRONK! is a free, outdoor music festival, featuring brass and drum-based street bands from across the country playing alongside local groups. Lauren Pearlman Paper Arts Space for All $1,000 Lauren Pearlman, founder and director of Paper Connection International is invited as artist-in-residence for the fall term to spearhead building a papermaking studio and implement a paper arts curriculum at Moses Brown. Carolyn Castro Hula Kahiko- The teaching of ancient Hula $3,000 I have plans to continue teaching ancient Hula to my apprentice. She has studied the language, the meaning of different signs as well as the actual dance movements. My goal is to have her continue her studies and in turn, be able to teach others this art form.
