The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the University of Rhode Island are pleased to announce the opening of an interactive public artwork by internationally known artist Erwin Redl at the Beaupre Center For Chemical and Forensic Sciences, 140 Flagg Road, Kingston, Rhode Island on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 4:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.
Unable to attend the opening? Participate anytime by submitting poetry online as part of the artwork: https://genesis.chm.uri.edu/. Redl requests that you create poems exclusively using the symbols of the periodic table. If selected, your poem will stream across the installation at URI and online via webcams.
An example might read as follows:
Mow basic barge (using the periodic table symbol combinations: “MoW BaSiC BArGe”)
Tivo pal clones foxes (symbol combinations: “TiVO Pal ClONeS FOXeS”)
Close singe. (symbol combinations: “CLOse SInGe”)
Everyone is welcome to submit poems All works must be original to the person submitting the entry, no copies of other artworks or published works.
You will be notified when your submission is received and again if it is accepted.
This is a rolling submission process run by the RI State Council On the Arts.
There is no entry fee.
The Department of Chemistry offers Bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and in Chemistry and Forensic Chemistry, a Master of Science in Chemistry and a Ph. D. In Chemistry. The University of Rhode Island, commonly referred to as URI, is the principal public research as well as the land grant and sea grant university for the State of Rhode Island.
Established in 1967, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) is charged by the state legislature to stimulate public interest and participation in the arts and to serve as the liaison to the state arts community.
Poems submitted to GeNeSiS are not subject to copyright law. This call is open to all people age 18 and over. Applications may be submitted individually or in collaboration with others. The selection panel will not discriminate against any applicant based on age, race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin or physical challenges.
About the artist:
Erwin Redl’s work is informed by his combination of conceptual-structural thinking and profound craftsmanship both in electronic and traditional media. With a BA in Music Composition from the University of Vienna, Austria and an MFA in Computer Art from the School of Visuals Arts in New York he has expanded his practice beyond the traditional Fine Art context.
